As I walked passed a mother and her son the other day, I observed her scolding him for something he apparently had done wrong to someone. I heard her say to him ” don’t you ever think about the golden rule?”

He looked up at her as if she was from a foreign country. I wanted to stop long enough to hear his reply but it would appear as I was not minding my own business, so as I left them to their own affairs I started thinking about what she had asked him.

The “Golden Rule”, well back in my youth those two words were always capitalized because it was a big deal then. Every class room I attended all through school had it written above the chalk boards where you had it in your sight every time you looked up at the front of the class. It hung on the walls of our Sunday School classes. So, whatever happened to it? How did a simple courteous gesture of life seem to go by the way side among the young in today’s society? In situations too often even the older who once knew it have forgotten it. I wonder what Jesus thinks as He watches the behavior of His people that He so deeply desires to have a relationship with so we would all know the Golden Rule and abide by it. That He wants us to see our fellow man/woman as He sees us. That He even tells us in His own words to love our enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you and pray for those who mistreat you.

That’s quite the challenge in this world today, isn’t it?

The Golden Rule…..

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Luke 6:31

Spoken from the mouth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
